Police have launched an investigation into the cause of this morning’s (Friday 20th September, 2019) incident involving a passenger bus that veered off the sidewalk and into the water at The Carenage, St. George’s. The emergency call was received about 09:20 a.m.
Several members of the public dove into the water and rescued all persons that were onboard.
One female passenger, Altrice Theresa De Coteau, 65, of White Gate, St. John was later pronounced dead at the General Hospital. A nine year old is currently at the Intensive Care Unit. All other persons were treated and released.
The passenger bus, at the time, was traveling along Young Street, St. George, en route to Woburn from the Bus Terminus.
Acting Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin, on behalf of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) is thanking all persons for their quick response and in particular, the divers and all others who assisted in the rescue efforts.
The RGPF condoles with the victim of the incident and wishes all others a speedy recovery.
The bus remains in police keep, and the driver is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation into the cause of the accident following which the necessary action will be taken.
Meanwhile, persons who were on the bus are hereby informed that they can collect their belongings at the Traffic Department Headquarters, Carenage, St. George’s.
